MATT — Photographer, Filmmaker,

Storyteller – Umi Creative

Born and raised on the banks of the Blackwood River in Bridgetown, Matt Moyes grew up with a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and creativity woven through the South West of Western Australia. From childhood holidays in Dunsborough to photographing school events and working in the high school darkroom, storytelling through images has always been a part of his life.

Inspired early by his father’s captivating travel slideshows — projected transparency films filled with stories from overseas adventures — Matt saw firsthand the power of a well-framed image to spark imagination, emotion, and connection.

After formal training in photography at TAFE in Perth — during the film era, before digital photography took hold — Matt eventually returned to Dunsborough, drawn back to the coast, the forests, and the creative community that now fuels his work. It’s also where he and his wife chose to raise their two sons, grounded in the same natural wonder and sense of connection that shaped him.

Creative Philosophy

Matt sees every project as a collaboration. He listens carefully to what each client wants to communicate — whether it’s a product, service, personal story, or creative vision — and brings it to life through crafted photography and cinematic video.

He approaches his work as a visual storyteller, aiming to create images and films that engage, move, and connect. Whether capturing the energy of a community event, the serenity of a coastal home, or the heart of a small business, Matt’s goal is always the same: to produce work that makes people feel engaged and positive — and to see his clients thrilled with the result.

Passionate about collaboration, Matt loves teaming up with other creatives, seeing their side of the story, and supporting the broader arts and media community across the South West.

He draws inspiration from emotive music, beautifully composed film, and the ever-changing landscapes of the region — from ocean to forest, vineyard to town.

My Connection to the Margaret River Region

I was born and raised in Bridgetown, right in the heart of the South West, and spent many childhood holidays along the coast in Dunsborough. After years studying and working in Perth, I felt the pull to return to this region — to reconnect with the ocean, raise my two sons, and live closer to the landscapes and community that inspire me every day.

The Margaret River Region is more than just a beautiful backdrop — it's part of who I am. From the raw coastline to the forests and vineyards, there's a richness here that fuels creativity. It’s also a place where people value quality, character, and connection — and I love working with others who share that appreciation, whether it's locals building something new or visitors drawn to the same natural beauty that brought me back.
